Call A Thing A Thing: You Complete Yourself!

A friend of mine was talking about the scene in Jerry McGuire where Tom Cruise says, “You complete me.” She went on and on about how romantic it is and it made me wonder whether that is what we as human beings are looking for. To be competed by another human being.

I’ve found that in the short space of time that I have been alive, we look for many things to add into our lives. Hobbies, passions etc. Some stay with us as we grow, some remain in the past. You will be quite shocked if you take a look back at the things you enjoyed a few years ago.

We learn and unlearn a lot on the way. But what I know for sure is that you can never unlearn yourself. You can never stop being you. You can’t switch off your “you-ness”. Whether we choose to be our true selves in private or in public, you are always you.

So when it’s quite clear that you always have your complete self, why is it that we seek things, or even another human being to “complete” us as if we are half beings or subhuman? I say if you are looking for someone to complete you, maybe you are not in the right position to find that person. We should be looking for people who complement our whole selves instead of completing our “incomplete” selves. Only you can complete yourself. Not another human being.

Along with everything which seems to be building throughout this specific area, many of your viewpoints happen to be relatively radical. Nevertheless, I appologize, but I do not subscribe to your whole theory, all be it exciting none the less. It would seem to everybody that your opinions are actually not totally validated and in actuality you are generally yourself not fully confident of your argument. In any case I did appreciate looking at it.

I absolutely welcome viewpoints that are contrary to my own. I think we all have different journeys and that affects which “theories” we subscribe to. Thank you so much for taking the time to read the post!
