Throwback Thursday: Smokey Robinson–Shop Around

Smokey Robinson is an American R&B singer who is well known for hits such as "Baby That’s Backatcha" and my personal favourite, "A Quiet Storm". He was the vice president of Motown Records under which his group, The Miracles were signed. In 1972 (the year my mommy was born) he announced his retirement from Motown as vice president, only to embark on a solo career the next year.

He studied electrical engineering and dropped out when The Miracles released their first record. Shortly after that he formed Motown records, which was first called Tamla Records. His first single with The Miracles was "Shop Around" which is the song we are focussing on today.

Smokey has also written a string of hit songs recorded by highly acclaimed artists such as The Temptations (My Girl). He was inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and in 1991 he won the Heritage Award at the Soul Train Music Awards. His group also got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2009.

Here’s the video for "Shop Around" which was his first single with his group, the Miracles. Enjoy!
