Throwback Thursday: Boom Shaka – It’s About Time

Boom Shaka is one of South Africa’s best-loved groups. The group was formed in the 80’s by Don Laka and consisted of Theo Nhlengethwa, Junior Sokhela, Thembi Seete and Lebo Mathosa who passed on in 2006 after great solo success.

They released their hit single “It’s About Time” in 1993 (the year I was born) and to this day it is still one of their most recognizable songs. The song launched them and is responsible for the major success they enjoyed in the 90’s. Their style and music made them pioneers in the music and fashion industry. If Lebo and Thembi wore something, it became a trend and everyone wore it.

Lebo and Thembi were the lead vocalist of the group, even though Lebo was the strongest vocally. Their style and dancing was loved and criticised by many. Despite criticism they continued releasing a string of hits which saw them winning accolades at the South African Music Awards multiple times.

Here’s a video of their hit, It’s About Time. Enjoy!
