My Travel Essentials

Exams are over and everyone is going home. Most of us will have to travel long distances. I for one, have been travelling a lot yet I still can’t seem to get it right when it comes to packing and what exactly it is that one can take on the road with you. Despite this, the following items are a definite must when I am travelling, especially by road.

A jacket is top priority for me even when it is summer. Many times the person driving the vehicle that you’re traveling in will switch on the fan instead of the heater in order to avoid drowsiness. Some of the places you pass could also be experiencing temperatures way below your starting point and destination. Comfortable shoes are also an absolute must.

I carry a portable charger for the car because it relieves me of the stress of a dead battery and it relieves my mom of the agony that something has gone wrong when she gets my voicemail. If I will not be able to use the vehicle to charge my phone, I fully charge my laptop and carry a USB cable with me.

A good book or two is also a great companion when traveling. If you’re travelling in the evening, you can get those little reading lamps that you can clamp onto your book. I got mine at the Crazy Store and I’ve also seen them at many book/stationary shops like CNA and Exclusive Books.

Good music always makes the road shorter. I usually make a CD or playlist the night before. I prefer this as opposed to carrying my CD’s on the road with me and having to skip songs because they are not in sync with my holiday mood. My playlist usually features a lot of Beyoncé. I also make an extra playlist with only gospel music on it. This is standard when I am traveling with mom. I also carry headphones in case we don’t agree on what music to listen to. Trust me, they are a true peacekeeper.

I don’t eat and drink much on the road, but a bottle of water is an absolute must for me. I find that it works out much cheaper when I buy my food and drinks at my local supermarket the day before rather than buying on the road. Pack enough water to last you the entire way. Carbonated drinks will only give you a truckload of sugar that your hips wont appreciate anyway.

Of course there are many other things that one could take along, but these are absolute essentials for me. What are your absolute must-haves when traveling long distances?
