This is a new feature I’m introducing to the blog. It is inspired by Oprah and Iyanla Vanzant through Iyanla’s show on OWN entitled “Fix my Life”. Unfortunately we don’t have OWN yet here in South Africa but I enjoy the tweets and YouTube footage.
“Calling a thing a thing” is basically the same as calling a spade a spade. Its about honestly and directly saying what you think or feel without beating around the bush (another idiom, please pardon).
So for my first post, I want to talk about apologies and forgiving. Often times, someone might do or say something that will hurt us, whether intentionally or unintentionally. In turn, it sometimes happen that we harbour the hurt and feelings associated with it towards that person.
But what I want to talk about is apologising. Sometimes we human beings complicate life unnecessarily. In a perfect world, we would apologise when we realise that we’ve done something wrong, yet it is not so. We need to improve on this and learn to say sorry. Pride won’t get us anywhere.
Forgiving is probably the most difficult thing to do, but I’m learning that even if we don’t forgive, the least we can do is accept a sincere apology. What more do we want? Just as we must accept when no means no and yes means yes, we should accept when sorry means sorry. Accepting is not the same as forgiving. Accepting is acknowledgement that you will at least try to forgive as forgiving is a process and doesn’t come immediately.
That’s my take. Apologise when you’re wrong, and accept a sincerely given apology. Its not for the other person. Its for yourself. So that YOU can have peace.
