5 Tips For New Joburgers!

Before you ask in which capacity I write this, yes, I have moved to Johannesburg. Once again, I’m a newbie. New city, new people and new adventures. As usual, moving to a new city is not always fun and games. How quickly you’re able to adjust will determine how pleasant your time in that particular place will be.

Joburg is notoriously known as the New York of South Africa. A city always abuzz with activity. Such a city is also known to be dangerous and learning to go around or avoid danger, is an art that many should master. Here are some of my tips on surviving Joburg and staying safe when outdoors.

1. Use Google Maps to navigate your destination before you head out

The prospect of getting lost is absolutely daunting for me and sometimes asking for directions is a sure-fire way to invite criminals. Navigating your way to your destination beforehand and memorising the directions will help you a great deal in ensuring that you don’t get lost.

2. Learn everything you can about the public transport system.

I’m talking busses, taxi’s and the like. Sometimes you will have to go somewhere that is a bit of a distance too far to walk. Knowing the fares will also help you to take the cheapest option and save up on your transportation costs.

3. Avoid direct contact with strangers

This is difficult seeing that the inner city is always packed with people. Try as far as possible to avoid contact. I’ve heard of situations where someone was too close to danger, got grabbed by the belt and got stripped of all their possessions. You don’t want this to happen to you.

4. Put away your headphones

So many people walk around with headphones in their ears, but to avoid attention from thugs who are waiting to mug you, put your headphones away. This way they wont know of any devices that you might be carrying with you.

5. Trust your instinct

Sometimes when something feels wrong, it is wrong. If you feel like you’re in danger, you most probably are. Don’t do anything that might put you in further danger like making a phone call. Rather find a safe place and call from there. Knowing where the nearest police station is could also be of great use.

These are my 5 tips for newbies to Johannesburg. They are not too hard to follow and may just save your life. Always remember that your safety comes first. Be sure to check out my post on APPS TO KEEP YOU SAFE.
